The only difference with our Malcolm Optics is the glass. The company continued in business until WWII, even though some new optical technologies, which would make these telescopic steel tube scopes obsolete.Īs a tribute to William Malcolm, our modern Malcolm vintage reproduction scopes are constructed to same specs with the general look and feel of the original scopes. By the turn of the 20 th Century, Malcolm had become the leading scope manufacturer in the U.S. He understood that a riflescope must be properly constructed to hold zero. In 1855, William Malcolm started building riflescopes. However it would not be until the mid 1800s that rifles became sufficiently accurate to require a telescopic sight. This scope does NOT have the USO Modification. The Unertl scope itself is a rarity, as it was NOT sent to US Optics for the reticle modification (as was done to most of the USMC 10X USMC Unertls) (sometimes called the “garbage can lid” modification). The gun comes with an original issued Unertl USMC 10X scope. Barrel marked “RTE-P” (meaning Rifle team Equipment– Proved”). With the “tombstone” style trigger group safety, as was used on the earlier USMC M40’s from the 1966-67 vintage Vietnam era first generation M40 guns.
